I love showing Orkney to visitors. I have the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to inform while entertaining. I have been guide since 2008 and a driver-guide since 2014. I have tow superb vehicles - either an electric Nissan Leaf or a Hyundai i800. I also offer private tours in your car and to organise visits for larger parties.
I am married to Margaret a fellow guide and an Orcadian from Sanday, one of Orkney’s most beautiful Outer North Isles. We met through performing together in the St Magnus Festival, one of Orkney’s many cultural Festivals. There are family tales about winning the New Year’s Day Ba’ and finding unexploded depth charges in fishing nets.
I have been a Chief Executive (in the not for profit sector). This, with my knowledge and experience enables me to put Orkney in its British, European and world-wide context. I am Scottish with family background is in Edinburgh and Border Reiver territory.
I know my Scottish History - I have a History Degree. Perhaps more importantly, my aunt wrote romantic historical novels; she took me, as a boy, to many of Scotland’s historic sites while researching her books.
I cover Orcadian archaeology, Orkney’s varied and different history, our beautiful beaches and fascinating scenery. I am equally at home on our 5,000-year-old World Heritage sites and showcasing our many Festivals or our famous food, drink and craft products.
I am happy both to work to your plans or to suggest itineraries. With past events management experience, I enjoy setting up tours for groups.
