I was born and brought up in the Scottish Borders and studied English Literature and Language with Mediaeval Studies at Edinburgh University. That included a year of Scottish History, Archaeology and Old Norse.
In 1996 I did the Blue Badge course becoming a member of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association.
For the last 16 years I have been guiding groups and individuals in Edinburgh and all over Scotland. This included incentives, educational groups and cruise ship work, both on board and shore excursions.
Having visited Orkney many times, in 2012 my husband and I realised a long held ambition to come and live here permanently. As my main interests have always been archaeology and history it is a dream come true. There is nowhere else in Scotland with a history spanning 5,000 years from the Neolithic to the Second World War, and all contained in such a compact area. Today Orkney is a welcoming, vibrant forward looking community and I thoroughly enjoy sharing its charms with our visitors. The landscapes are beautiful and the wildlife abundant.
I bring to tours of Orkney my knowledge of Scotland, placing Orkney in its wider context of Scotland and the world. I mix my tours with stories and humour bringing past and present to life. I can work as a step on guide for your coach or in your own car, for half day or day tours. I also do shore excursions from cruise ships. I will tailor your tour to your particular interests and can book site visits.
I do not driver guide myself but my husband Chris [who is not a guide] is a licensed private hire operator, with an 8 seat Mercedes. Together we can take parties of up to 7 people with me guiding and my husband driving.
